Kelly Higgins

Kelly is an LCSW with over 14 years of mental health clinical experience working with late adolescent, adult and geriatric populations. She has a comprehensive understanding of local community agencies and resources due to the variety of clinical settings in which she has been employed. Clinical settings have included: inpatient behavioral health, emergency rooms providing crisis assessments, women’s shelters and behavioral health admission units. Previously in North Carolina, Kelly worked in both intensive outpatient treatment and outpatient treatment programs for mental health and substance use.

Kelly has an eclectic approach to therapy, drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy, strengths-based therapy, brief solution focused therapy, family solution focused therapy and acceptance commitment therapy. She tends to engage with the client to see what s/he needs to work on and selects a therapy approach that is most appropriate. Kelly has worked with numerous unique clients with varying challenges including:

Kelly received her Bachelor of Science in Human Services Counseling from Old Dominion University. She moved soon after graduation to North Carolina, where she received extensive training in the treatment and management of substance abuse. She received a certification in North Carolina and Internationally to be a Substance Abuse Counselor; for some time, she focused and engaged with that population solely. After that, she decided to pursue a graduate degree in community clinical social work. Kelly received her Master of Social Work with a Substance Abuse Certificate from East Carolina University. She also has over 50 hours of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy training.

Kelly’s main goal is to aid her clients in identifying their life goals, and to be able to work through the challenges they face in a safe and comfortable environment so that they are better able to achieve them.
